For centuries the blacksmith has been regarded as the most important craftsman in the rural community. It was he who made and serviced the vast range of iron implements, tools and utensils used on the farm, in the workshop and in the home. In the days before the tractor, when farmers relied upon the horse, the blacksmith also spent much of his time engaged in shoeing and other farriery tasks.
As an introduction to the work of the rural blacksmith, this book looks at the basic techniques of ironworking and the range of skills involved. Records from Llawr-y-glyn, a typical Montgomeryshire smith during its heyday in the 1860s, provides a vivid picture of the craftsman at work in the community. This book also acts as a guide to the Llawr-y-glyn smithy, now re-erected at the Welsh Folk Museum, St Fagans, Cardiff.
John Williams-Davies is Assistant Keeper in the Department of Farming, Crafts and Cultural Life at the Welsh Folk Museum.
