With this fireside companion, you can chop wood, send sparks flying, and plan a feast . . . all from the comfort of your armchair!

When early humans learned how to control fire, they changed the course of evolution. In this beautifully illustrated book, Øivind Berg traces the use of fire as a heat source, a means of preparing food, and a social gathering point, both indoors and out. He explains how to kindle a fire, the characteristics of different woods as fuel, and how to cook over a fire, Norwegian style. It's the perfect book for anyone who embraces the popular Danish concept of hygge.

In this illustrated book, Oivind Berg traces the use of fire as a heat source, a stove, and a social gathering point indoors and outdoors, right up to the present day. He reveals the types of fire, the art of kindling, the characteristics of different woods as fuel, and the secrets of Norwegian live-fire cooking. With this book you can master how to lay and tend a fire, understand why the wood snaps and the flames dance, and harness the creative and destructive power of this most vital element.

Øivind Berg is a Norwegian teacher and author who has written numerous books for children, young people, and adults about Norwegian nature and wildlife, outdoor activities, culture and history. He has been awarded the Culture Department's Special Prize for his authorship, and in 2015 won the Sørland literature prize for his book Sjøøret - a biologisk og kulturhistorisk portrett ('The Sea Trout - Biology and Cultural History'). In 2013 he also received Arendal District's cultural prize.
