Traditional Farm Buildings of Britain and their Conservation is a newly revised and further enlarged edition of the book first published in 1982 with a second, enlarged, edition in 1987.

The main part of the book explores traditional designs for farm buildings which developed from the Middle Ages through the various agricultural revolutions and which virtually came to an end with the slump in agriculture of the 1880s. Text, diagrams and specially taken photographs are combined to show, describe, explain and illustrate the traditional farm buildings which still survive in remarkable numbers and which form essential elements in the landscapes of villages and countryside which we all find attractive and which we all seek to preserve and enhance.

In this edition, greater emphasis is placed on the developments in farm building design after 1880, largely the products of professional and commercial activity, and on the problems of conservation now that traditional designs are no longer appropriate to modern farming. Conflicting demands in conservation and re-use are explained, including the danger of enthusiastic restorers destroying the character of what they desire to preserve.

An enlarged bibliography and an extended reference section reflect the great advance in the study of farm buildings since the publication of the earlier editions.
